DIY Kato Ballast

Ever find yourself in need of additional Kato ballast but can't find a ready source? Eddie Stavleu posted this recipe on Facebook (Feb 2015) for making your own.

Add the following and mix thoroughly:

  • 1 part Woodland Scenics Cinder Fine Ballast
  • 1 part Woodland Scenics Light Gray Fine Ballast
  • 9 parts Woodland Scenics Gray Fine Ballast (Thomas' recipe is 5 parts Gray)

However, there is a recipe on Thomas Tuerke's site that predates Eddie's posting of his formula by several years that only varies in the ratios of the ingredients. For more information on that original recipe read Thomas' article Imitating Kato Ballast on his website.
